Fabric Strength Testing of “Orphaned” Reserve Canopies

Because of the recent discovery of a G.Q. Security Lopo parachute

manufactured in 12-81 that failed pull testing during a routine inspection and

repack procedure, the PIA Technical Committee recommends:

1) All “orphaned”

reserve/emergency canopies manufactured prior to January 1990 with

mesh covered vents be tensile tested per PIA TS-108 (“Parachute

Canopy Fabric Pull Test, Non-Destructive Method”) at the next

inspection / repack.

2) That this pull test be repeated on an annual basis.

3) Report all test results to

DOM, panels tested, fabric colors, etc.
